WEEKEND REVIEW: Dundee first through to the Scottish Cup final.

Dundee Comets make it through to the finals of the Scottish Cup after a hard fought game against the Kirkcaldy Kestrels at the Fife Arena on Saturday.

John Dolan bagged the opening goal for the Comets just 4 minutes in, but it wasn’t long before the Kestrel’s Conor Duncan levelled it with a penalty shot.

In the 2nd period the Dundee side went ahead scoring 2 further goals by Darren Donaldson and Ben Brown putting the visitors 3-1 at the end of the period.

The 3rd saw Conor Duncan score his second goal of the game for the Kestrels, but with only 30 seconds left on the clock there just wasn’t enough time for the Kirkcaldy side to pull things back and the Comets took the 3-2 win.

Aberdeen and Paisley have yet to play their semi-final for the Scottish Cup and details of that game and the final are still to be confirmed.

Back to the action in the SNL and there has been some jostling at the top of the table with Edinburgh Capitals edging just 1 point ahead of Aberdeen Lynx to take the lead after winning both their games this weekend.

The Edinburgh side headed the Galleon Centre on Saturday for the return leg against Kilmarnock Thunder. It was only last weekend the Capitals scored that goal at the very last second against Thunder to clinch the win.

Chad Smith opened the scoring for the Caps whilst on a Power Play but Thunder’s Ines Gallacher found the back of the net just 5 minutes later.

It was all even at the start of the 2nd but it wasn’t long before Keegan Cairns bagged his first goal of the evening which took Thunder to a 2-1 lead. Capitals Andrey Ogloblin levelled it, but the goals came thick and fast with the Edinburgh side finishing 3-4 up.

It was looking like another close game until Joel Gautschi for the visitors upped the anti with a hat-trick in the 3rd to complete the job, claiming their first 2 points of the weekend.

Battling to hold on to the top spot league leaders Aberdeen Lynx made the long road trip to North Ayr. With the season being so competitive and the Capitals biting at their heels, Aberdeen were hungry to take home the win to on top.

Lynx forward James Demeo opened the scoring just 5 minutes in, following swiftly with his second goal whilst on the power play.

Demeo scored his third goal early on in the 2nd for his hat-trick of the game.  The young North Ayr side dug deep and Ryan Campbell netted a short handed goal, but 9 minutes later Gary Kelly and then Nils Tanner extending the Lynx’s lead to 5-1.

The 3rd period saw North Ayr’s latest signing, netminder Evan McTaggart, putting in a busy shift against the experienced Aberdeen side, only conceding one goal in the last few minutes to Lynx manager/player Jordan Leyden.

The comfortable 6-1 win to the Lynx brought them to 31 points with two games in hand against the Capitals.

There was no rest for Edinburgh Capitals on Sunday as they played host to Paisley Pirates in a highly anticipated game. In their last meet the Pirates won 5-4 when it went to penalties.

Only 26 seconds after puck drop Caps assistant captain Chad Smith opened the scoring on home ice before chalking up his second goal of the game short handed 8 minutes later.

A goal by Sean Cochrane brought the score line to 3-0 for the home team giving them a comfortable lead at the end of the 1st.

The second period got underway way with Sean Cochrane netting his 2nd goal of the evening. Extending the lead further for the Caps was Andrey Ogloblin before Ben Coughtrie found the back of the net whilst on the power play.

Pirates Calum Blair managed to get one past Capitals net minder Craig Chalmers 6 minutes before end of the 3rd period, but Chad Smith scored for a hat-trick soon after finishing the game 7-1 to the Capitals.

With some big games ahead in the final weeks of the season, the pressure is on for the teams at the top to up the ante and secure a spot at the Play-off weekend which is being held at Murrayfield on April 8th & 9th.
